Campgrounds Near Niceville Fl - In preparation to leave the beautiful Florida weather, I spent 3 nights at Rocky Bayou State Park north of Destin and outside of Niceville, Florida. Rocky Bayou is the smallest state park in the Florida state system with 42 RV sites that are fully connected.

Rocky Bayou State Park is located on the north shore of beautiful Choctowhatchee Bay with 14 campsites that have direct or limited access to the water. If they try to enter reserves 29 - 37 for the best access to water.

The campsites are surrounded by large sand dunes dominated by trees in the park. I was originally only signed up for two days, but I enjoyed my stay so much that I was able to extend my stay for a third night, even if it meant moving to another location, which turned out to be one of the places with access to water, so I wouldn't complain here.

Rocky Bayou State Park

The three separate hiking trails within Rocky Bayou, Red Cedar and Rocky Bayou are shorter 6/10 mile hikes, and the Sand Pine trail is just over a mile long. All routes offer many opportunities to see egrets, great blue herons, ospreys, hawks and bald eagles. Binoculars and field guides are available at the range near the park entrance.

If you can't bring your own watercraft while you're at Rocky Bayou, there are boats and kayaks that can be rented by the hour.

My stay at Rocky Bayou was very quiet and relaxing with just perfect weather for three days. Some of the more well-known parks in the area (like the Bayou) are hard to find in season because camping spots are reserved 100 months in advance, but Bayou State Park is somewhat of a "secret" and often enough. If you have small children with you, you can enjoy a more peaceful beach. On the Destin Bridge from Crab Island, look to the right. This is a peninsula that you can make your way to and pick a quiet spot to park your boat. The water and air are a bit calmer and more relaxed.

Yes, you can. But the sound of the wall is very enveloping and not overwhelming. During our stay we were in campsite #20 and had no problems with traffic noise.

We also continued many walks to the fishing pier where we had to walk under a bridge. Not only was it surprisingly quiet, but another thing was really interesting.

This field is absolutely gorgeous with trees blooming with Spanish moss and watching the Destin lights come on. The RV area is well laid out and a great place for kids to ride their bikes and make new friends.

The campground is quiet, but just minutes from Destin, Florida, there are plenty of places to explore for a family trip. The water in the bay is an emerald green, which Destin is not known for, but it is clean, warm and very clear.
