The A-5 Vigilante is a supersonic fighter-bomber designed by North America for the US Navy. Its service in the nuclear strike force (replacing the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior) was brief. However, like the RA-5C, it saw extensive service during the Vietnam War in a strategic countermeasures role.
Beginning in August 1964, medium high risk missions (as reported in this post) were conducted.
On 1 March 1971, while flying one of these missions over North Vietnam, Lt Cdr Barry Gastrock and Lt Emy Conrad, flying RA-5C Vigilante BuNo.156624 of Reconnaissance Attack (Heavy) Squadron Six (RVAH-6), called " Field Gold 602" from USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63), photographing the crash.

Heading south, the Vigilante reappeared as it approached the river at Hung Nghia less than four minutes after passing through the same village to the west. Conrad saw a flash in his viewfinder, heard a "whumpf" and was catapulted into his seatbelt. The coast wasn't far, and the crew went to "cool their feet" immediately after making a routine landing at Kitty Hawk.

Moments later in the ship's intelligence center, a photo translator transferred six inches of film from one large roll to another across the light table and stood in awe. Complemented by the Vigilante's vertical camera is the SA-2 surface-to-air missile (SAM) weapon which is also being promoted.

The crew was called in for a near miss. As there was no visible ground in the frame, they assumed the SAM passed alongside the RA-5C as Lt Cdr Gastrock made a hard turn home. Knowing the camera's focal length and the SA-2's size, the photographers calculated that the missile had passed only 104 feet from the Vigilante's stomach.
No one knows why it didn't explode although the most likely theory is that the missile had not yet reached arming time when it fired past the mocking RA-5C.

Although the Vigilante was fast and agile, 18 RA-5Cs were lost in combat during the Vietnam War: 14 to anti-aircraft fire, three to surface-to-air missiles, and one to MiG-21s. Partly because of these combat losses, an additional 36 RA-5C aircraft were produced from 1968 to 1970 as friction replacements. This aircraft is very different from the previous RA-5C. Improved engines, Leading Edge extensions on the intakes, revised intake design, and other changes make this worthy of being called the RA-5D - but the previous designation has been retained. The last phase of the Vigilantes were known as the 156 series aircraft since their BuNo started with the number 156 (some of the earlier RA-5Cs were also rebuilt to the same standard so there were exceptions).

The North American A-5 Vigilante is an American-based supersonic bomber designed and manufactured by North American Aviation (NAA) for the United States Navy. Prior to the merging of the Navy and Air Force designations in 1962, it was designated the A3J Vigilante.
Development of the A-5 began in 1954 as a private project by the NAA, which was seeking to produce a powerful long-range bomber as a successor to North America's failed XA2J Super Savage. It is a large and complex aircraft that incorporates many innovative features, such as being the first bomb to feature a digital computer, while its ability to reach speeds of up to Mach 2 while carrying a nuclear strike payload will also be powered for now.
