In the second half of the 20th century, it was still unclear whether the future of sporting and service weapons would be semi-automatic pistols or revolvers. When semi-autos reasserted their role as a military sidearm, most law enforcement agencies, especially in the United States, relied almost exclusively on the revolver. These were the years when brands like Colt and Smith & Wesson were the market leaders, competing with revolvers. The watershed year can be identified with 1955, when Colt introduced the legendary .357 Magnum revolver, while Smith & Wesson responded with the 29.44 Magnum. While interest in revolvers slowly but surely declined year after year. The last sensation was again from Colt in 1990, with the introduction of the .44 Magnum Anaconda revolver, a project that was gradually embraced by a then reduced niche market, dominated by newcomer Ruger. Its Redhawk and Blackhawk models. Constructed entirely of stainless steel, the Anaconda Colt was a very traditional revolver, with a double-action trigger, six-barreled cartridge, and the classic vented rifled barrel characteristic of the Python, Boa, and Diamondback models. The original Anaconda was available in 4-, 6- and 8-inch barrels, and it appears that a hundred or more were made with the odd 5-inch barrel. It was also chambered in 45 Colt caliber. The production of the original version was stopped in 2003.
The new Anaconda closely resembles the look and design of the previous model, with the exclusive use of stainless steel, and will be available in 6- and 8-inch (15-20 cm) barrel lengths. The trigger action is borrowed directly from the new Python, with a foil spring that ensures a smooth and crisp action. The new Anaconda has interchangeable sights with a fully adjustable rear and a front ramp nut with a high sight insert. The top of the frame is drilled and tapped to mount a scope. The new Anaconda comes standard with an excellent Hogue one-piece rubber grip. The barrel has a recessed target crown to protect it from damage, and the frame and cylinder cover are semi-opaque. With these features, the new Colt Anaconda is trying to carve a niche for itself in the pistol hunting arena, certainly a niche market, but very popular in the US. We'll see if the Colt name retains the appeal it once had among revolver enthusiasts. The Colt Anaconda price in the US is $1,499 for both barrel lengths (about €1,350). (joke intended). The opinion I am always ready to offer to my wheelgun friends is that Colt is one of the most important revolver companies that ever exist for a variety of reasons. One reason the Samuel Colt is so awesome is that it needs no introduction, but the value that Colt revolvers bring. If you have a snake gun, as many Colt models borrow their name and are fondly referred to as snakes, then you have something really valuable. That's why it's so controversial when Colt doesn't even make revolvers. With that said, I have a bold prediction (or maybe wishful thinking): next year in 2021, the Anaconda Colt will be back!
As I'm sure Colt is an avid reader of TFB, I hope this at least inspires them to give us a Colt Anaconda soon. Historically, the Anaconda Colt has not been out of public circulation for a long time. The last time Colt produced an Anaconda was in 2006, exactly 14 years ago. This is when Colt decided to stop producing the much more popular Python, but people have been clamoring for more Pythons ever since. Why so little love for anaconda?
If you find yourself a good magnum, the Anaconda would be the next logical step for the Colt. So far they have started small and simple with the Colt Cobra while reintroducing double action revolvers over the past 5 years. Somehow their manufacturing and engineering feet got wet. Then they made it something bigger in the Colt King Cobra Target that we reviewed here. The next step in the wheeled gun mount was to restore the very romantic python. They did it with a few hiccups along the way, but they did it successfully. The next step would be Colt Anaconda, right? Well, they're ditching a few models in their previous lineup if you're a purist, but who's counting, right?

If you are a Colt guy, you might want to see a Kodiak in .44 Magnum make a comeback, but the realist in me believes that it will never happen. So, if you want the punch of a .44 Magnum, you have to show up in an Anaconda Colt. Only 2,000 Kodiak revolvers were made in 1 year, while the Anaconda had produced tens of thousands. This is the reason why the legend and nostalgia of anacondas is so much stronger.
From an aesthetic point of view, Python and Anaconda are very similar. Now that Python is back in circulation, the Colt Anaconda is very easy to manufacture. Both models often use Pachmayr rubber grips, have a Colt medal on the grip, similar stainless finish, and on some models even share a red ramp front sight with a white design adjustable rear sight. The main difference is that the Anaconda uses a larger frame to support and host the .44 Magnum cartridge.
With every new endeavor, no matter how familiar, it always brings new obstacles to overcome. So, while I can rave about how great it would be if Colt brought back the Anaconda, that's definitely easier said than done. Whenever a company creates something "new", there are significant start-up costs. You have to design something new... assign staff to the project which means pulling people from other projects or hiring non-test staff... and all this costs money. I have no real financial connection to where the Colts are these days, but their arsenal isn't as strong as it once was. They make fewer 1911s, fewer AR-15s, and their revolver lineup is respectable but small. They seem to focus on fewer projects to ensure that they are
Is the Colt Anaconda a good project to do? I believe it is, but I'm a die-hard dual-revolver fanatic who selfishly wants to see Anaconda again. Maybe next year will be a great time for the Colts. Maybe 2021 will be a scary time. The general public will never understand the full picture or extent of what kind of commitment it is to bring a new model of firearm to market. So, while I would love to see the Anaconda owl again, I don't want it to re-emerge to cripple the Colt brand long-term. Think about the bigger picture, what do you think? The Colt revolver holds a very special place in my heart. I grew up shooting my dad's 1969 Colt Cobra which he carried until he passed away and I inherited. It was a tangible symbol of skill and reliability. When Colt started producing the revolver again in 2017, I was excited and have since shot every model they produced.
