Like many students, Ohio State University senior Blair Teaford uses Spotify playlists to make her commute to and from school more bearable. Unlike many, Tifford's playlist served a noble purpose.

Tifford is a rape survivor. While participating in a university sexual decency and empowerment program for assault survivors, she turned her personal playlist into an empowerment tool.

"I was listening to a lot of songs that helped me on my reading journey, and I wanted to add to this list, because I was listening to the same five songs over and over again," says Tifford. "I just thought, 'What a great idea to list everyone's input on these songs that empowered them and made them feel strong.'"
So Tifford reached out to friends and other survivors and asked them for suggestions. The "By Survivors for Survivors" playlist is now a broader collaborative effort, where survivors from across the university can contribute. (You can listen to the playlist below.)
"A big part of the playlist was that it was pulling music from a lot of other survivors to show that you're not alone," she says. "There are so many people who know what you're going through, these are the songs that helped them, and we're all in this together."
Along with Alicia Keys and The Beatles, current picks include lean pop—Selena Gomez, Sia, and Frank Turner appear multiple times, though there's no limit to what genres or artists are allowed.

"They're about working through a difficult time or getting out of a difficult relationship, and those are a lot of things that survivors can relate to, because it's not just about being sexually assaulted," Tifford says.
